Report Violence or Abuse


The Women Peace Security Network (WPSN) Rivers State is committed to advocacy initiatives to tackle Violence Against Women and Girls, and promote Women’s Political and Economic Empowerment in Rivers State.

As part of activities to mark the 16days activism, WSPN is running a 16days safe space geared towards encouraging people to speak out and report cases of Violence Against women and Girls. This will help give visibility to the prevalence of VAWGs in Rivers State and promote interventions and responses that will address the issue of Gender Based Violence.  The planned activities will be carried out in collaboration with the Ministry of Women Affairs, other key Ministries Departments and Agencies like the National Human Rights Commission, FIDA, the Nigeria Police Force, the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps amongst others.

The planned activities which will take place within Nov 25th – Dec 10th 2014, include setting up a test Safe Space for Counselling, legal advice, referral and mediation for cases of Violence Against Women and Girls in Rivers State, domiciled in the Rivers State Ministry of Women Affairs, Eastern Bypass, Marine-Base Port-Harcourt.

The recent Stakeholder engagements and Advocacy visits carried out by WPSN has deepened understanding around issues of VAWGs and built strategic partnership with some relevant Ministries Departments,  Agencies and Security Agencies will give credence to this process and foster collaboration to tackle Violence Against Women and Girls in Rivers State.

Will be and is currently taking up these cases;

  • Rape on minors and adults
  • Sexual violence on minors and adults
  • Threats, verbal and emotional abuse
  • Intimate partner abuse
  • Harmful widowhood practices and widowhood disinheritance issues
  • Domestic violence
  • Wife battery and spouse abandonment
  • Force Female Genital Cutting/mutilation or circumcision

And other forms of violence any woman or girls may face or experience and not mentioned here.


When cases are reported here or to the counselling centre, WPSN will assist with referral, counselling and documentation of cases reported as well as step by step follow up on each case reported. We encourage the Government, communities, families, individuals and the larger society to work towards preventing Violence Against Women and Girls, but when it does occur we also appeal and encourage people to report these cases to challenge and bring a stop to the impunity that encourages Violence Against Women and Girls in Rivers State.

The Women in Peace and Security Network has dedicated staff and members who have been trained on documentation, counselling and referral of incidences and cases of Violence Against Women and Girls.

Be assured that all information submitted will be treated with respect and confidentiality. The best interest of the child is our guiding principle as enshrined in the Child Right Act of 2003, the United Nations Convention of the Right of the Child. The Women in Peace and Security Network will ensure this principle is followed with regards to cases of child abuse especially sexual abuse.
