ACTIVITIES TO COMMEMORATE THE 16 DAY ACTIVISM TO END VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN AND GIRLS (VAWGS) IN RIVER STATE FROM NOVEMBER 25TH – DECEMBER 10TH 2014 BY THE WOMEN IN PEACE AND SECURITY NETWORK, RIVERS STATE

 As part of the activities to commemorate the 16days activism to end Gender Based Violence in Rivers State, the planned activities and dates are listed below;

1.      Airing of jingles from the 24th of November to the 9th of December

2.      A solidarity walk on the 25th of November and a press briefing/conference for the launching of the 16days Violence Against Women and Girls mock reporting, counseling, documentation and referral center in the complex of the Rivers State Ministry of Women Affairs to commemorate the 16days activism to end Gender Based Violence

3.      Radio and television talk shows from the 20th of November to the 10th of December

4.      10th of December: press conference to end the 16days activism and publicize the outcome of the 16days Counseling and referral center.

HELP LINES FOR VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN AND GIRLS IN RIVERS STATE

24 hours help lines will be made available for people to access, counsellors will be available to speak to anyone in confidentiality. The help lines will be available from the 25th of November 2014.

PARTNERSHIPS AND CONTRIBUTIONS TOWARDS THE 16DAYS ACTIVISM AGAINST GENDER BASED VIOLENCE IN RIVERS STATE

The Rivers State Ministry of Women affairs

The Rivers State Ministry of Women Affairs will be providing a Safe Space within the complex of the Women Affairs Ministry for women and Girls to Report Cases of abuse. There will be counsellor, mediators, and lawyers available to take reports that come in.

BELLE FOUNDATION

Belle foundation is a young budding organization founded by Biebelle Alex Hart, her partnership and involvement with WPSN stemmed from the sustained advocacy and interventions WPSN has been involved with, geared towards promoting multi-stakeholder collaboration to reduce violence against women and girls. Her foundation’s aim is to prevent sexual violence amongst young girls as well as provide healing and counselling support for survivors of sexual abuse and violence.

The training was held to better equip members of her organization and key members of WPSN working on child rights, to have a better understanding of child sexual abuse, the medical implication and how to go about seeking for help for child survivors of sexual abuse.

 

Palmbits IPWC

PalmbitsIPWC is a group of young men who use creative writing as a tool for public enlightenment; they are using the social media to educate the public on the issue of VAWGs especially sexual violence on minors. This is to enable more people understand the issues and be aware that they are prevalent to engender active participation.

To achieve this PalmbitIPWC has set up an online educational campaign on sexual violence against minors and is also launching an essay competition online to encourage people to participate in the 16days activism.

NATIONAL HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION, SOUTH-SOUTH ZONAL OFFICE PORT-HARCOURT, RIVERS STATE

Part of the mandate of the Commission is to take up cases around Gender Based Violence, especially amongst women and girls. Commission has a team of lawyers that are charged with addressing these issues. Some cases are admissible and inadmissible to the Commission with respect to their mandates. NHRC works to mediate domestic issues rather than dissolving marriages unless the safety of persons is at risk. Commission takes into cognizance the trauma divorce and marital separation has on children. Admissible cases of VAWGs can be referred to the Commission through the 16days activism as the Commission is open to handle cases referred by CSOs and also State institutions.

BIGGLO CONCEPT

BigGlo Concept has sent out letters to secondary schools for sensitization programs within schools. This will be an avenue to talk to school children about VAWGs and also encourage them to access the services available for the 16days activism. WPSN members’ will be volunteering to carry out these sensitization programs. More people are encouraged to volunteer

CENTER FOR ENVIRONMENT HUMAN RIGHTS AND DEVELOPMENT

CERHD will include her peace club members to the 16days activism campaign to create more awareness about VAWGs in Rivers State.

MRS. MIESIA BOB-MANUEL a staff of Rivers State Television and a member of the Women in Peace and Security Network is organising a 30munites interview session with members of the Women in Peace and Security Network on Violence Against Women and Girls and the 16 days activism against Gender Based Violence.

MRS. LILIAN OKONKWO, the Chairperson for NAWOJ, will work on a documentary on VAWGs for the 16days activism as well as feature the solidarity walk on the 25th of November in the documentary. She will be interviewing key persons from WPSN, the Permanent Secretary, Key Staff of the Ministry and the Programme Manager for Gender and Development Action Mrs. Patience Ekong.

MR. ABIYE HOWELLS a performing artiste who approached the Ministry of Women Affairs with a one minute short video on VAWGs. It was decided that his video which has messages on encouraging women’s political participation and eliminating Violence Against Women and Girls will be added to WPSN online media publicity plan.

TONTO DIKEH FOUNDATION (TDF)

TDF will be doing a national media publicity for the 16days activism for the Women in Peace and Security Network, Rivers state, in press conference in Lagos on the 26th of November 2014.

The TDF team will be visiting Port-Harcourt from the 8th to the 10th of December to give support to WPSN on the 16days activism, as well as provide more media publicity for the 16days activism.

The founder of TDF, Tonto Dikeh will be present for the final press brief on the 10th of December 2014

TDF is taking care for all logistic implication for its team to attend and participate in the 16days activism.

GARDEN CITY RADIO

GCR is providing 30 minutes free live interviews for WPSN on the 16days activism as well as covering the solidarity walk and the press brief.

Please more contributions are needed to give more impact to this advocacy initiative and public enlightenment programs for the 16days activism against Gender Based Violence.
